Throwback Thursday | Kwanza Unit – Zipi?

It is yet another Thursday, and it is time to reflect on a moment from approximately 28 years ago, featuring one of the pioneering groups in Tanzania, KWANZA UNIT, with their song ZIPI?(Diduda). This track was part of their album TROPICAL TEKNIQS, which was released in 1997 and recorded at Sound Crafters Studios located in Temeke. Today, I would like to emphasize two verses from two members of the group: Y Thang (who is wearing a black T-shirt in the photo) and Godfrey Koshuma, also known as “Fresh G” (who is wearing a Kwanza Unit T-shirt-Photo above) from this collaboration.

Among her notable singles are “Upo Nyonyo,” “Sponsor,” and “Sisi Ndo Wale,” which have earned her several Tanzania Music Awards and collaborations with brands such as Coca‑Cola Africa and Guinness.

Rehab” is a mid-tempo Bongo Flava song by Phina, originating from Tanzania. It was released as part of her live EP, In The Moment Ep, in January 2025. The track is distinguished by its catchy melody and emotional performance, highlighting her soulful voice and lyrical richness in a live context.

Salmin Ismail Hoza, popularly known as Kusah, hails from Bumbuli in the Tanga Region of Tanzania. He is a Bongo Flava singer and songwriter recognized for his breakout hits such as “Kelele,” “I Wish,” and his songwriting contributions to prominent artists. Since rising to fame in 2018, he has been regarded as a rapidly emerging star in the Tanzanian music scene.

The track “Rewind” is a lively collaboration featuring Kusah and Bill Nass, both of whom are esteemed artists from Tanzania. This song fuses smooth Bongo Flava rhythms with captivating rap verses, highlighting Bill Nass’s energetic flow in conjunction with Kusah’s melodic hooks. Mbwana Yusuph Kilungi, who is professionally recognized as Mbosso or Mbosso Khan, was born on October 3, 1995, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He is celebrated as a talented singer-songwriter and instrumentalist, enchanting audiences with his soulful voice and profoundly emotional storytelling. Mbosso first gained significant attention as a prominent member of the renowned Yamoto Band (2012–2017), a group that played a pivotal role in transforming the modern Bongo Flava genre with their hit songs and distinctive sound.

Currently, Mbosso has made a comeback with a compelling new single, “Pawa” — the highlight track from his newly released EP titled Room Number 3. This EP signifies an important milestone in his career, representing a new beginning and his courageous emergence as a self-assured independent artist. The title, Room Number 3, symbolizes a personal space for growth, self-exploration, and artistic freedom.

Pawa” (which translates to Power in Swahili) is a love ballad steeped in profound emotion. Utilizing rich metaphors and fluid Swahili expressions, Mbosso likens love to a powerful force—so intense that it leaves him feeling powerless: “naishiwa pawa” (I’m losing power). His vocals seamlessly glide over a melodic blend of Bongo Flava and soulful instrumentation, achieving a harmonious balance between vulnerability and admiration.

The EP comprises six enchanting tracks along with one exclusive bonus song, highlighting Mbosso’s growth and maturity as he fully embraces his creative identity.

He initially captured public attention with his 2022 EP “Listen to Me,” particularly with the hit single “Unanisitiri.” Following this success, he has released additional tracks, including club and romantic songs such as “Hakunaga” and “Najikubali.”
