Throwback Thursday | Soggy Doggy Anter – Sauti Ya Ghetto Ft Drez Chief & Jos Mtambo

It is yet another Thursday, and as per our tradition, we present a throwback track of the day. This week, our attention is directed towards my friend and family member, Anselm Ngaiza, widely recognized as Soggy Doggy Anter. Today, our focus takes us back to 1999, from his album titled Bongo New York, which features a song named “Sauti ya Ghetto“.

In this track, Soggy collaborated with Drez Chief from the group BDP Kamili, representing Kinondoni, and Jos Mtambo from Kigamboni, Dar-es-salaam. The phrase Sauti ya Ghetto is a Swahili term that translates to “Ghetto Sound.” The album also includes other well-known songs such as “I Love You Too” featuring Unique Sisters, “Kifo” featuring the late legend Dr. Remmy Ongala, among others.

The song consists of three verses, with each artist taking turns to deliver their verses, showcasing various rapping styles, metaphors, and lyrical patterns. Upon its release, this song received significant airtime on all FM radio stations in Tanzania.

THROWBACK | KBC – Heads On The Regular

It is yet another Thursday, which marks our tradition of sharing a throwback 🔙 track of the day. Today, we will highlight a member of the Kwanza Unit group, presenting one of his finest solo tracks. His name is Kibacha Singo, also referred to as KSingo. The title of the song is “Heads on the Regular.”

As the title implies, the track features a hard-hitting Boombap beat that undoubtedly resonates. KSingo delivers impactful lyrics that enhance this remarkable beat. This serves as a quintessential example of Tanzanian 90s hip hop tracks that enabled Bongo Hiphop enthusiasts to genuinely experience the vibes. Tanzanian rap heavyweight Songa makes a powerful return with his latest single, “Misamba,” a compelling track that fuses sharp lyricism with gritty production. This new release, crafted by the talented Black Ninja, highlights Songa’s raw storytelling prowess and lyrical supremacy within the East African hip-hop landscape.

Renowned for his intense delivery and socially aware lyrics, Songa employs “Misamba” as a lyrical canvas to depict authentic experiences, street wisdom, and the challenges of hustle and survival. The song’s Swahili title, Misamba, metaphorically signifies the struggles and harsh realities encountered by many in their daily lives themes that resonate profoundly with his audience.

AUDIO | Wakazi – Crooked Crown

Born Webiro Wassira also know as “Wakazi” has made his return, and this time he is fully committed. His latest track, “Crooked Crown,” has just been released and is already making waves in the East African rap scene. In this audacious lyrical declaration, Wakazi delivers his message with accuracy, assurance, and unfiltered truth, igniting discussions throughout Tanzania and Kenya.

In “Crooked Crown,” Wakazi addresses what he refers to as a “weak diss” from Kenyan rapper Khaligraph Jones (also known as O.G). However, instead of merely retaliating, Wakazi guides his audience through a lyrical exploration shedding light on the politics of East African rap, challenging the notion of false royalty within the industry, and championing Tanzanian artistry and cultural identity.

Throwback Thursday | Wabakiaji

It is Thursday, which means it is time for this week’s Throwback Joint. Today, I will concentrate on a short-lived group consisting of three hip-hop artists from Kenya and Tanzania. The group was named WABAKIAJI, and its members included Naziz from Kenya, her cousin Jaffarai, and Jay Moe from Tanzania. This group recorded two tracks at Bongo Records under the guidance of the legendary producer P Funk Majani.

The titles of the songs they recorded were “Wabakiaji,” which translates to (Those who remained ‘Survivors’), and “Kama Ningetawala,” meaning (If I ruled). According to Jay Moe during an interview with Kuvichaka at the Classic of EFM, these songs were financed by Naziz.

AUDIO | Dwin – MTAAN

Dwin (Godwin Peter Lerowi), an emerging artist in the Tanzanian Bongo Flava scene, showcases smooth vocals intertwined with lively rhythms. Hailing from Tanzania, he is part of a new generation that is transforming the genre. His debut album, Mtaani So Cold (June 2025), along with earlier singles such as “Real” and “Nice Guy,” received critical recognition, paving the way for his latest single.

Released on June 30, 2025, “MTAANI” is an audacious Afro track brimming with vibrant energy and urban soul. Drawing inspiration from street life, the term “Mtaani” (Swahili for “neighborhood” or “the hood”) narrates a tale of resilience, ambition, and community pride.

Crafted with intricate percussion, melodic strings, and Dwin’s distinctive vocal appeal, “MTAANI” offers a refreshing auditory experience and serves as a soundtrack for the indomitable spirit of African youth.
