Throwback Thursday | Wabakiaji

It is Thursday, which means it is time for this week’s Throwback Joint. Today, I will concentrate on a short-lived group consisting of three hip-hop artists from Kenya and Tanzania. The group was named WABAKIAJI, and its members included Naziz from Kenya, her cousin Jaffarai, and Jay Moe from Tanzania. This group recorded two tracks at Bongo Records under the guidance of the legendary producer P Funk Majani.

The titles of the songs they recorded were “Wabakiaji,” which translates to (Those who remained ‘Survivors’), and “Kama Ningetawala,” meaning (If I ruled). According to Jay Moe during an interview with Kuvichaka at the Classic of EFM, these songs were financed by Naziz.

AUDIO | G Nako Ft Zuchu – Hapo

(George Sixtus Mdemu) commonly referred to as “G-Nako” collaborates with Tanzanian sensation “Zuchu” (Zuhura Othman Soud) for the electrifying new single “Hapo,” which was released on 6 July 2025. The song combines G-Nako’s smooth Bongo-Flava style with an infusion of Latin beats, creating a sound that is both danceable and captivating.

G-Nako was born in Arusha in May 1983 and is the sole son of Mr. and Mrs. Mdemu, a proud brother to two sisters, and a father to Samantha. Zuchu, who was born on 22 November 1993 in Zanzibar and is currently signed to WCB Wasafi, contributes her distinctive vocals and songwriting talent to this collaboration.

“Hapo” is already making waves on playlists throughout East Africa and beyond—demonstrating that when two of Tanzania’s top artists come together, the outcome is an immediate summer hit.

Renowned Tanzanian hip hop artist and former Member of Parliament for the Mikumi constituency, Professor Jay, whose real name is Joseph Haule, makes a significant comeback with his new release, “Ebenezer.” This track features the Ugandan AfroBeat star, Jose Chameleone, born Joseph Mayanja, who is recognized for his unique voice and multilingual lyrics in Luganda, English, and Swahili.

Additionally, the song includes Tanzanian Bongo Flava legend “Q-Chief,” whose real name is Aboubakary Shaaban Katwila, also known as Q Chillah or Savimbi, who is celebrated for his emotive vocals and enduring influence on the East African music landscape. This remarkable collaboration fuses hip hop, AfroBeat, and Bongo Flava into a compelling anthem of appreciation and strength.

Mbwana Yusuph Kilungi, who is professionally recognized as Mbosso or Mbosso Khan, was born on October 3, 1995, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He is celebrated as a talented singer-songwriter and instrumentalist, enchanting audiences with his soulful voice and profoundly emotional storytelling. Mbosso first gained significant attention as a prominent member of the renowned Yamoto Band (2012–2017), a group that played a pivotal role in transforming the modern Bongo Flava genre with their hit songs and distinctive sound.

Currently, Mbosso has made a comeback with a compelling new single, “Pawa” — the highlight track from his newly released EP titled Room Number 3. This EP signifies an important milestone in his career, representing a new beginning and his courageous emergence as a self-assured independent artist. The title, Room Number 3, symbolizes a personal space for growth, self-exploration, and artistic freedom.

Pawa” (which translates to Power in Swahili) is a love ballad steeped in profound emotion. Utilizing rich metaphors and fluid Swahili expressions, Mbosso likens love to a powerful force—so intense that it leaves him feeling powerless: “naishiwa pawa” (I’m losing power). His vocals seamlessly glide over a melodic blend of Bongo Flava and soulful instrumentation, achieving a harmonious balance between vulnerability and admiration.

The EP comprises six enchanting tracks along with one exclusive bonus song, highlighting Mbosso’s growth and maturity as he fully embraces his creative identity.

Collaborating with him on this impactful project is Bien-Aimé Baraza, commonly referred to as Bien, a prominent Kenyan singer, songwriter, and music executive. As a vital member of the acclaimed Afropop group Sauti Sol, Bien contributes his emotive voice and lyrical richness to this vibrant track.
