THROWBACK: The Legendary DJ & Producer “Boniluv”

Boniface Kilosa, commonly known as BoniLuv, and also referred to as Papa Luv or Scratch Master, is a prominent DJ from Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He has been instrumental in the evolution of the DJ and music production landscape in Tanzania, especially during his time at Mawingu Disco Tech and Studios in the 1980s and throughout the 1990s.

BoniLuv’s enthusiasm for music began in his adolescence, prompting him to hone his DJ abilities in various clubs and hotels throughout Dar es Salaam. He furthered his knowledge in music production and sound engineering during his time in the UK and the US. At Mawingu Studios, he not only records music for a variety of artists but also produces commercial advertisements.

He credits his success to the support he received from his peers at Clouds FM radio station, where he held the roles of director and presenter for many years.

Throughout his career, BoniLuv has developed a wide-ranging skill set that encompasses music production, sound engineering, DJing, and the design of commercial advertisements. He has also gained expertise in music programming and possesses an extensive understanding of the music industry. 2K Mawingu Studios has been responsible for producing records for numerous artists, including Mwanafalsafa, Manduli Mob, Crazy GK, Solid Ground Family, AY, Lady Jay Dee, Bizman of InAfrika Band, Bambo, RD, Mister Ebbo, Kasiri, JLT, and many others.

In the early 1990s, him and his colleagues at Mawingu Studios in Mwenge, Dar es Salaam, recorded their first album titled “The Clouds – Msela,” which was released in 1994. The album featured major hits, including the title track “Msela” and “Siamini.” BoniLuv also played a significant role in promoting several artists, such as Hard Blasters, GWM, Gangwe Mob, Dar Young Mob, Unique Sisters, Ugly Faces, Grazy GK, and Professor Jay, who was then known as Nigga Jay. Additionally, he had the chance to collaborate with Ngomanagwa, formerly known as Taff B, who recorded a track at these iconic studios.

Cassette Cover “Funga Kazi 2000”

It’s Thursday again, and today we’re celebrating the 90’s Tanzanian Hip Hop group, The Hard Blasters Crew. The group originally had five members: Terry Msiagi (Luna T aka Fanani), William Shundi (Big Willie aka Crazy One), Ngida Raphael (KC1), Gabriel Kilunga (Tuff Jam), and Frank Korassa (Trigger F).

In 1994, they participated in the Yo Rap Bonanza Competition and came in second place. This success led them to release their first album, “Mambo Ya Mjini,” which featured popular songs like “Matapeli,” “Cheka nao,” “Mabishoo,” and “Ni Hard Blasters.” The album was a hit, prompting them to work on a second one in 1996. However, during the production, three members left the group to focus on school or pursue opportunities abroad, while others took over family businesses. Despite the challenges, they completed the album titled “Blast Nuff,” which included tracks like “Aje Naua,” “Kwenye Rap,” and “Blast Nuff.”

Their final album came after they added Joseph Haule, also known as Professor Jay, who was previously called Nigga J. This album, “Funga Kazi 2000,” featured popular songs such as “Chemsha Bongo,” “Mamsap,” and “Chuzi Limekubali.” To celebrate this throwback, I’m sharing one song from each album. Enjoy!
