Renowned Tanzanian rapper Jay Moe, whose full name is Juma Mohamed Mchopanga, has unveiled a new solo single entitled “40 Bars.” This track represents a genuine Tanzanian Hip-Hop / Bongo Rap release, emphasizing authentic lyricism, storytelling, and a seasoned rap performance.

Officially launched on June 26, 2026, “40 Bars” was made available through “So Famous Entertainment“. The song is devoid of hooks and guest appearances, allowing Jay Moe to fully express an unfiltered hip-hop message.

In “40 Bars,” Jay Moe contemplates themes of survival, fame, loyalty, betrayal, and the enduring journey of maintaining relevance in the music scene. The track embodies an old-school hip-hop vibe, concentrating on real-life experiences and distinguishing between fleeting fame and lasting legacy.

With his incisive flow and seasoned voice, Jay Moe employs “40 Bars” to remind audiences that authentic hip-hop is founded on truthfulness, depth, and perseverance.

Tanzanian hip-hop artist ZAiiD has unveiled a new single titled “Zuchu,” featuring his collaborator, the Bongo Hip-Hop heavyweight P Mawenge. This track is a hard-hitting Tanzanian Hip-Hop piece characterized by sharp lyrics, powerful beats, and a robust lyrical performance.

Officially launched on July 2, 2026, “Zuchu” merges two distinct rap styles into a single record. ZAiiD showcases a rapid and contemporary flow, while P Mawenge contributes his impressive, commanding voice and seasoned lyrical prowess. This song draws notable parallels to their previous collaboration, “Pisi Kali.”

Musically, the track boasts a bass-heavy hip-hop sound with intricate drum patterns, providing both artists ample opportunity to display their talents. The juxtaposition of ZAiiD’s swift delivery and P Mawenge’s authoritative voice enhances the uniqueness of this collaboration.

Throwback Thursday | G.W.M – Kipe Kitu

Today is Thursday, a day that holds significance. We celebrate G.W.M with their song “Kipe Kitu,” one of the two tracks that introduced them to the Tanzanian music industry.

G.W.M, which stands for Gangstas With Matatizo, is also known as Mazimwi, with “matatizo” meaning problems in Swahili. Adopting the persona of a U.S.-style gangsta rapper in Dar es Salaam certainly presents its own challenges.

Nevertheless, G.W.M has remained committed to reality rap, performing exclusively in Swahili and addressing the everyday struggles faced in the streets of Bongo. This term, a colloquial reference to Dar es Salaam, implies the necessity of intelligence to navigate life, as “bongo” translates to smart or clever in Swahili.

The group consists of three members: D CHIEF, born Robert E. Makala; EASY DOPE, born Richard Makala, who is D Chief’s elder brother; and K.R. MULLAH, born Rashid Ziada.

The music of the 90s had its distinct character. Special recognition is due to “DJ Boniluv,” whose real name is Boniphace Kilosa (see photo below), for producing this track and part of their album “Mikosi.” Their most well-known songs include “Cheza Mbali na Kasheshe” and the track we are discussing today, “Kipe Kitu.” K.R. Mullah and D Chief formed a formidable duo.

“Kipe Kitu” gained immense popularity, particularly at concerts, with the largest audience being secondary school students in the 90s. They were often compared to the American duo Das EFX due to their Igitty diggity rap style and stage presence.

In Swahili slang from Tanzania, “Kipe Kitu” means let’s leave or dip out of here.

Throwback Thursday | Ugly Faces – Wapambe Nuksi

It is Thursday once more, which signifies the arrival of Throwback Music, a moment for us to reminisce about the past filled with memorable melodies. Today, we will highlight the group “Ugly Faces” from Ilala Shariff Shamba in Dar-es-Salaam. This duo comprised two aspiring rappers who were keen to establish their presence in the music industry: Benjamin McDennis Kamtawa, known as Mac D, and Khatibu Amani, referred to as Easy Daz.

Our focus today will be on their debut single, which was recorded at Mawingu Studios in Mwenge, Dar-es-Salaam, under the production and engineering of Boniphace Kilosa, also known as DJ Boniluv.

Released in 1995, the single titled “Wapambe Nuksi” rapidly gained popularity, generating excitement among the youth during their performances at secondary school concerts. Its success was indisputable.

In 1996, they returned to the same studio to record a second single, once again collaborating with DJ Boniluv, after their manager at the time, Richard Mwandemani, also known as DJ Richmaka, secured the necessary funding. This second track, “Chachatika,” further cemented Ugly Faces’ position in the Tanzanian music landscape.

Throwback Thursday | Kilimanjaro Natural Spring Water Ad – D Rob & Chef Rhymson

It is yet another Thursday, and as you are aware, it is time for this week’s Throwback Joint. Today, we will discuss two members of the Kwanza Unit group who were pioneers in commercializing business for the water company “Kilimanjaro Natural Spring Water.” The artists in question are the late Robert Mwingira, who passed away in 2002 and was also known as D Rob or Zomba, and Zavara Mponjika, recognized as Chef Rhymson.

This advertisement was created while they were working on their Kwanzanian album in 1999. This album featured tracks such as “Run Tingz,” “Msafiri,” “Acha,” “Nakuja,” and “Beyond Belief,” among others.

This commercial advertisement opened doors for other emerging artists to create advertisements for various products, thereby enhancing their income. It demonstrated that even contemporary artists could engage in advertising and were not the hooligans that many parents feared, who believed their youth were heading down the wrong path.

“Radio One Stereo,” which catered to the new generation of youth in the 90s, along with “Clouds FM,” frequently aired this advertisement while playing youth-oriented music during that period.

Throwback Thursday | Black Rhyno Ft Fatma – Don Dada

It is yet another Thursday, and you know what that means? It is time for this week’s throwback joint. This track was released 16 years ago and is one of those infectious songs that compels you to nod your head. The track is titled “Don Dada” by the one and only Black Rhyno, featuring Hardmad’s sister, “Fatma“.

Nicholaus Haule, better known by his stage name Black Rhyno or Black Chatta, is a distinguished Tanzanian hip-hop artist, entrepreneur, and former banker. He is highly regarded in East Africa for his musical contributions and has made notable advancements in both business and philanthropic endeavors.

Mandugu Digital

“Don Dada” was produced by Ambrose Dunga, also known as “Mandugu Digital“. He created the beat for the song at Pinnacle Records, and after departing from the label, Black Rhyno recorded the vocals at 41 Records. For mixing and mastering, Dunga teamed up with another talented producer named “Chizan Brain“. Together, they ensured that the project reached its maximum potential.

“Fatma” contributed one of the most memorable hooks of all time to the song, making this track one of my favorites from Black Rhyno’s album titled “Usipime“. This album is available on all major music platforms, including Apple, YouTube, Spotify, and even the East African platform Mdundo. The album features hits such as “Black Chatta“, “Usipime Ft Dully Sykes“, “Usije niacha Ft Chid Beenz“, “Happy Ft Noorah“, and many more.

This song stands as a compelling testament to the group’s capacity to infuse a novel sound into the Bongo Flava genre, demonstrating their artistic evolution through strategic partnerships with both seasoned professionals and rising stars. “Kausha” showcases Wabeti’s remarkable technical flow and their creative vision, which mirrors street life and social realities.

Tanzanian Bongo Flava icon Q Chief, also referred to as Q Chilla, concludes his TimeLess project with a compelling collaboration titled “Baba Lao,” featuring fellow Tanzanian stars Dully Sykes and Country Wizzy.

Officially launched on May 20, 2026, “Baba Lao” is positioned as Track No. 10 on TimeLess, a comeback album that honors Q Chief’s legacy and impact as a prominent figure in the Tanzanian music scene. The project, released under OrbitMziki, also showcases artists like Young Lunya and Christian Bella.

“Baba Lao” serves as a bold and dynamic anthem centered on themes of confidence, success, street influence, and veteran status. The title, which translates to “Their Father” or “The Bossman,” signifies the trio’s dominance in the Bongo Flava and hip-hop landscape, as they share insights from their wealth of experience, resilience, and earned respect.

In this track, Q Chief showcases his distinctive melodic style, Dully Sykes infuses legendary street essence, while Country Wizzy contributes sharp rap energy, creating a harmonious blend of traditional Bongo Flava and contemporary hip-hop culture. Tanzanian Bongo Flava/Rap artist from Arachuga “G Nako“, whose real name is George Mdemu, collaborates with Darassa on the vibrant track “Pakata,” a high-energy Bongo Flava party anthem that was released on June 12, 2026.

The song “Pakata” features two prominent figures in Tanzanian music, with G Nako taking the lead and Darassa contributing his distinctive lyrical style. The track was executive produced by G Nako himself.

The title “Pakata” is derived from Swahili, meaning “to hold” or “to carry,” which aligns perfectly with the song’s lively atmosphere. It is characterized by heavy basslines, rapid delivery, and memorable party phrases such as “shika baba shika mama,” promoting dancing, celebration, and seizing the moment without restraint.

Lyrically, “Pakata” focuses on nightlife, movement, and unrelenting energy, incorporating references to food, drinks, partners, and a celebration where “hakuna kulala.” Darassa enhances the track’s vibe with his assertive delivery, likening the hustle and pace to that of a busy daladala, while firmly rooting the song in contemporary Tanzanian street culture.

The Tanzanian hip-hop artist and rapper Mansu Li, also recognized as Sinza Starr, was born Mansoor Ally. He is celebrated for his contributions to the Bongo Flava/Hip Hop music genre and his notable collaborations within the East African rap community. His involvement spans the evolution from “Tamaduni Muzik” to “Kikosi Kazi” and now to “Tukusa” (Tunajua Kuchana Sana).

Mansu Li has released the highly anticipated single, “Holiday,” featuring the bongo flava/R&B artist Damian Soul, further enriching his growing collection of hits in 2026. The track was produced by Gachi B and officially launched on June 13th, 2026.

Mansu Li reinforces his position as a significant voice that embodies the spirit of entertainment and culture, effectively connecting hip-hop artistry with Tanzania’s dynamic music landscape. Known for his rich vocals, articulate delivery, and outstanding storytelling skills, Mansu Li once again blends the energy of hip-hop with distinctive Tanzanian rhythms, showcasing why he is considered one of East Africa’s most respected rap artists.

“Holiday” is a romantic song that takes listeners on a journey as Mansu Li expresses his feelings to a woman, talking about the good time they will be having while Damian Soul contributes a memorable hook with his exceptional voice: “Everyday is like a holiday, nikiwa nawe. Nikama Holiday, Holiday.”
