Hamaguy is a member of the Solid Ground Family, a Bongo Flava ensemble based in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. The group consists of : four members, known by their stage names:(Vicent Francis) Master V, (Abdala Akili) Big Black, (Hamad Ramadhani Digalu) Hamaguy, and (Frank Alex) GZ

The group has gained recognition for several singles, including “Baba Jeni,” “Bushi Party,” “Kichaa cha Jerry,” “Athumani Mlevi,” and “Happy Birthday.” The latter remains particularly popular, as it continues to secure performances for those wishing to celebrate their birthdays with the group.

Hamaguy, one of the group’s members, has ventured into a solo career with the release of his project titled “Hakuna kama Baba” in November 2024. The title translates from Swahili to “Nobody Like Dad” and features Bongo Piano elements, celebrating fathers who are dedicated and actively involved in their families.

THROWBACK | KWANZA UNIT

Kwanza Unit, abbreviated as KU, translates to “First Unit” and was established in 1993 through the amalgamation of various groups, including the Villain Gangsters led by the renowned rapper Rhymson (also known as Ramadhan A. Mponjika), Riders Posse, Tribe X, along with several solo artists.

The founding members of Kwanza Unit include Rhymson, KBC (Kiba Cha Singo), D-Rob (Robert Mwingira), Eazy-B (Bernard Luanda), Emmam Abbas (Abbas Maunda), Fresh-G (Godfrey Koshuma), and Y-Tang, among others. Additionally, there exists a broader network of affiliated individuals known as the Kwanza Unit Foundation or Kwanzanians.

Kwanza Unit attained international recognition, performing on two occasions in Nairobi, Kenya, and receiving an invitation to Nigeria in 1998, which they were unable to accept due to unforeseen circumstances.

The group’s debut album, self-titled Kwanza Unit, was released in 1994, followed by their second album, Tropical Techniques, 1996. Their third album, Kwanzanians, was launched in 1999, available in both tape and CD formats. The single “Msafiri,” featured on the third album, Kwanzanians, gained notable attention.

Although Kwanza Unit has since disbanded, several former members continue to pursue solo music careers. The new generation emerging from the Kwanza Unit lineage includes artists such as One the Incredible and Khalid Kumbuka.

Mwasiti Almas Yusuph, born on February 2, 1986, stands as one of the most esteemed female artists in Tanzania. With a career that has flourished for more than ten years, she has made significant contributions to the Bongo Flava and Zouk music genres, serving as an inspiration for numerous emerging artists.

Her career-defining single, “Nalivua Pendo,” achieved remarkable success by reigning at the top of Tanzanian radio charts for eight consecutive weeks, which earned her the accolade of “Best Zouk Song” at the 2009 Tanzania Music Awards. Throughout her career, Mwasiti has consistently produced a series of successful tracks, cementing her status as a musical icon in Tanzania.

The song ‘Usichoke’ is a romantic ballad that emphasizes the virtues of patience, dedication, and resilience within relationships. Mwasiti’s gentle vocals and lyrical artistry render this piece a timeless classic.
