Today’s featured throwback artist is the late Joni Woka, who gained popularity in Tanzania during the early 2000s. His song and accompanying video, titled “Domo Zege,” translates from Swahili Tanzanian slang to “Gynophobia.”
Throughout his career, Joni Woka contributed significantly to the Bongo Music scene, delivering numerous hits, including “Walimu” featuring Wagosi Wa Kaya. His collaborator, Ras Lion, also made notable contributions with tracks such as “Ile Bar” by Rex, “Nikikupata” and “Yallaa,” among others.
Tragically, Joni Woka passed away following a garage accident while he was working as a mechanic. According to his brother, Omary Milay, the incident occurred on February 16, 2016, when he was struck by a heavy object resulting from the explosion of a gas cylinder he was using to repair a vehicle. He was promptly taken to Muhimbili Hospital, but unfortunately, he did not survive. May his soul rest in peace. 🙏🏾
