Throwback Thursday | G.W.M – Haya Twende

It is Thursday, which signifies a special moment. Today, we honor G.W.M with their track “Haya Twende”, one of the two songs that marked their entry into the Tanzanian music scene.

G.W.M, an acronym for Gangstas With Matatizo, is also referred to as Mazimwi, with the word “matatizo” translating to problems in Swahili. Emulating the persona of a U.S.-style gangsta rapper in Dar es Salaam undoubtedly poses its own set of challenges.

However, G.W.M has remained dedicated to reality rap, performing solely in Swahili, and tackling the daily hardships encountered in the streets of Bongo. This term, a colloquial reference to Dar es Salaam, suggests the need for intelligence to navigate life, as “bongo” means smart or clever in Swahili.

The group is comprised of three members:
D CHIEF (real name Robert E. Makala)
EASY DOPE (real name Richard Makala), who is the elder sibling of D Chief
K.R. MULLAH (real name Rashid Ziada)

The music of the 90s had its unique flavor. A special acknowledgment goes to DJ “Boniluv” real name “Boniphace Kilosa” (Photo below) for producing this track and their album “Mikosi.” Their most popular song was “Cheza Mbali na Kasheshe.” K.R. Mullah and D Chief formed an inseparable duo.

Additionally, a shout-out to Jumanne Thomas for sharing the audio clip of this song. #bongo90s #gwm #tmkstyle #tbt #bongothrowback🎼🎼🎼🎼🎼🔥🔥🔥🔥💯💯

Audio | T.I – Let Em Know

Following the successful returns of Clipse, Mobb Deep, and De La Soul last year, T.I. emerges as the latest veteran in the rap scene aiming for a comeback.

After dedicating the past few years to his comedy career and the expediTIously podcast, alongside navigating several legal challenges, the Grand Hustle leader declared over the weekend: “T.I. is back.”

Tip initiated his comeback journey by unveiling a new single titled “Let Em Know,” which is produced by his long-time collaborator and Producer of the Year contender (due to his contributions to the Clipse’s Grammy-nominated Let God Sort Em Out) Pharrell.

With a lively, bass-heavy beat from Skateboard P, who has previously worked on T.I.’s hits such as “Blurred Lines,” “I’m Serious,” and “Get Back Up,” as well as the majority of his 2014 album Paperwork, the Bankhead bully confidently returns with a boastful anthem.

“All they do is fight for number two ’cause I’m the one / Still make ’em play with the one / All we know is success, hit her with some rich sex / Good luck gettin’ your bitch back, she forever mine ’til I let her go,” he raps.

In addition to his musical revival, T.I. has also cut his dreadlocks and reverted to his signature low fade — the polished hairstyle he sported during his prime in the 2000s.
