Tanzanian rap veteran “Legendary Wolf Gang” Is Back, born “Benjamin McDennis Kamtawa“, known by his stage name Mac D or Mac Dizzo. He has been an active participant in the music scene, particularly in rap, since 1994. Alongside his friend Daz Amani, they were previously known as “Ugly Faces” and released their track Wapambe Nuksi in 1995, marking the official beginning of his musical journey.

Mac D, a trailblazer in Swahili Hip-Hop and a highly regarded figure in Tanzania’s rap community, is celebrated for his profound lyrics, mature themes, and his capacity to convey real-life experiences through his music. Today, he has released “Dawa” via the Aznas Link platform. This track combines traditional storytelling with contemporary production, addressing themes of growth, responsibility, and the evolution of life.

In “Aznas 40 Bars Episode 7,” Mac D presented “Dawa,” which translates from Swahili to English as “Medicine” 💊. He exemplified the true essence of being an OG in the industry with his 40 bars. The Tanzanian music scene still owes Mac Dizzo a significant place within it.

Throwback Thursday | Sugu – Mambo Ya Fedha Live Performance.

It is another Thursday, and in accordance with our tradition, we select a throwback track to enjoy. Today’s selection features the one and only Joseph Mbilinyi, better known by his stage names Mr. II, Sugu, and 2 Proud. He is a notable Tanzanian politician, human rights advocate, and rapper. Originating from Mbeya, Tanzania, he began his rapping career in 1990 and has since established himself as the first Tanzanian rap artist to gain substantial recognition.

His music addresses political themes, social injustices, and various challenges encountered by Tanzanians, making him a voice for the voiceless. As a prominent figure in the Bongo Flava genre, Sugu tackles significant social issues in Swahili, including subjects such as prostitution, immigration, and the struggles of street children. His unique lyrical style, marked by a systematic yet swift delivery, has become a defining characteristic of the genre.

Sugu, also known as Mr. II or Jongwe, and sometimes referred to as Taita, is personally regarded by me as the “Triple OG” of Tanzanian hip-hop or Bongo Flava. He is the chief organizer of the annual Tanzania Hip-Hop Summit and has recently been involved with the Bongo Flavour Honors, excelling in the industry. He has garnered numerous Pan-African music awards and has performed at various international festivals. His song “Haki” is considered the quintessential anthem of Bongo Flava in Swahili.

On this Thursday, we are showcasing a video of Sugu performing “Mambo Ya Fedha” alongside Lady Jaydee, with Afande Sele providing stage support. This performance was part of the album launch for his sixth LP titled “Muziki Na Maisha,” released in 2001.

Throwback Thursday | Manzese Crew – Maisha Ubishi

It is yet another Thursday, and today our throwback selection of the week features the Manzese Crew with their track titled “Maisha Ubishi,” which was their second single was popular and it has a long history with the producer of the song vs Narlon. This is a story for a different day.

Manzese Crew is a pioneering and established Tanzanian hip-hop group that hails from the Manzese neighborhood in Dar es Salaam, having been formed in 1998. They are closely linked with the legendary artist Juma Nature and the TMK family, and the group has played a significant role in shaping the foundations of Bongo Flava and Swahili rap culture through their authentic street narratives and notable collaborations.

The group officially consists of three members: the leader Abuu Leonard Raphael (Narlon), Fred Joseph (Tito), and Jofrey Lington, also known as Jevit. Additionally, the artist Madee Ali has been affiliated with the Manzese Crew.

“Maisha Ubishi” is a street expression that translates to life being tough and filled with challenges; it emphasizes the necessity of fighting, maintaining resilience against despair, and refusing to surrender easily in order to progress. The characteristics of “Maisha Ubishi” include: perseverance i.e continuing to fight regardless of difficulties; self-reliance—acknowledging that nothing is given freely; one must actively seek opportunities; and a test of endurance—showing inner strength during challenging times.

The song “Maisha Ubishi” was officially released in 2002. It was recorded at Bongo Records under the legendary P Funk Majani. The production, mixing, and mastering of the track complement the group’s raw and gritty rapping style. They have produced hits such as “Kula Kona,” “Haya Wee” featuring Juma Nature, “Oya Oya,” “Karibu Yangu,” and many others.

Tanzanian hip-hop artist Rosa Ree has unveiled her latest track, “Mkaskazini,” a powerful Hardcore Hip-Hop anthem that honors the identity, pride, and vibrant street culture of Tanzania’s northern region.

Produced by Controller and released under Rosa Ree‘s name, the song is distributed worldwide by The Orchard Enterprises. It officially debuted on August 7, 2026.

The title “Mkaskazini” translates from Swahili to “The Northerner.” This song encapsulates the culture and self-assurance of areas such as Arusha, Moshi, Mererani, and the broader Kilimanjaro region. Rosa Ree employs incisive street lyricism and local slang to assert her heritage and demand respect for her community.

Rich in cultural references, the track mentions Mount Kilimanjaro, Mererani, traditional cuisine, and Mbege, the famous banana beverage from the north. These elements contribute to a strong regional identity while transforming the song into a broader anthem of pride and aspiration.

Musically, “Mkaskazini” features an intense beat, robust percussion, and Rosa Ree’s powerful rap performance. Its impactful production and catchy hook make it a striking tribute to northern Tanzania.

Tanzanian hip-hop powerhouse Nikki Wa Pili collaborates with Stereo, Mr. T Touch, and fellow Weusi member G Nako on the track “Humo Humo,” a dynamic Swahili hip-hop piece filled with incisive bars, clever wordplay, and vibrant street energy.

Officially launched on August 7, 2026, this track marks a reunion between Nikki Wa Pili and G Nako, a duo recognized for their previous works like “Nje ya Box” and “Quality Time.” The inclusion of Tamaduni Music member Stereo and seasoned producer-artist Mr. T Touch enhances the collaboration with a more robust rap-centric sound.

Lyrically, “Humo Humo” features sharp punchlines, relatable Tanzanian references, personal affirmations, and insights into street life and ambition. The artists skillfully incorporate regional identities, the culture of Dar es Salaam, themes of wealth, football, and resilience into their rapid-fire verses delivered in Swahili.

The Tanzanian rapper uses the song to talk about self-belief, identity, and knowing your worth. He also looks at the pressure people face from others and the need to stay true to yourself.

“EGO” carries a strong street feel, with a hard beat and clear drum patterns supporting Mex Cortez’s rap. His vocals stay sharp as he moves through the song with confidence and control.

The lyrics give the track its main strength. Rather than simply talking about pride, Mex Cortez looks at the different sides of having a strong ego. The song touches on personal limits, inner strength, and the choice to stand your ground when people try to bring you down.

Throwback Thursday | Hard Blasters Crew – Mabishoo

It is Thursday once more, and today we are honoring the 90’s Tanzanian Hip Hop ensemble, The Hard Blasters Crew. The group initially consisted of five members: Terry Msiagi (Luna T, also known as Fanani), William Shundi (Big Willy, also referred to as Crazy One), Ngida Raphael (KC1), Gabriel Kilunga (Tuff Jam), and Frank Korassa (Trigger F).

In 1994, they took part in the Yo Rap Bonanza Competition, securing the second position. This achievement led to the release of their debut album, “Mambo Ya Mjini,” which included hit tracks such as “Matapeli,” “Cheka nao,” “Ni Hard Blasters,” and “Mabishoo,” the latter being the focus of our discussion today.

Mabishoo is a Swahili slang term from Tanzania that translates to “a person who enjoys showing off.” The Hard Blasters addressed individuals who displayed such behaviors in their lyrics. This lengthy song comprises five verses and spans five minutes.

The album was well-received, prompting the group to begin work on a second album in 1996 called “Blast Nuff“. However, during the production phase, three members departed to concentrate on their education or to seek opportunities abroad, while others took over family enterprises. Despite these obstacles, they successfully completed the album titled “Blast Nuff,” which featured songs like “Aje Naua,” “Mateso Matupu,” “Kwenye Rap,” and “Blast Nuff,” among others.

Their final album was released after the addition of Joseph Haule, known as Professor Jay, who was formerly called Nigga J. This album, “Funga Kazi 2000,” included popular tracks such as “Chemsha Bongo,” “Mamsap,” and “Chuzi Limekubali.” To commemorate this nostalgic moment, I am sharing an edited version of Mabishoo, featuring only three verses.

THROWBACK THURSDAY | Bantu Pound – Bado Nakutesa.

It is yet another Thursday, and in accordance with our tradition, we present a nostalgic track of the day. This week, we turn our attention to my friend and family member, who is widely known as Soggy Doggy. Today, we revisit the 90s with a song from his group Bantu Pound’s album titled Ilala, which includes the track “Bado Nakutesa“.

“Ilala” is a seminal early Tanzanian hip-hop album that was released in 1996 by the groundbreaking Bongo Flava group Bantu Pound Gangstaz (BPG), featuring members such as Soggy Doggy Anter , Profesa Ludigo Bishota, and Caz-T along with other affiliates like Nigger Pure and Kassie, are part of the broader crew history.

The standout track from this album is the well-known early radio single “Bado Nakutesa“, which played a significant role in launching Soggy Doggy Anter’s career since he solely performed the song while it was a group project and received extensive airplay in Mbeya and throughout Tanzania via IPP Media, including ITV, Radio One Stereo, CTN Radio, Radio Free Africa, and various local radio stations.

Anselm Tryphone Ngaiza, better known by his stage name Soggy Doggy (or Soggy Doggy Anter), is a trailblazing Tanzanian hip-hop artist. He is recognized as one of the foundational figures of Bongo Flava, the unique hip-hop and urban music genre of Tanzania.

Soggy Doggy gained even more fame in the early 2000s, working closely with the legendary Bongo Records producer P-Funk Majani. Some of his most notable tracks include: Nilisoma nae, Kibanda Cha Simu, Usingizi, Story and many others.

Tanzanian rapper Dicazzi collaborates with Country Wizzy on the track “Pande Mbili,” a powerful Bongo Flava / Tanzanian Hip-Hop piece that merges incisive lyricism with contemporary urban production.

The song delves into the realities of life from two distinct viewpoints. Translated as “‘Two Sides’ of the coin,” “Pande Mbili” contemplates street life, authentic versus superficial relationships, and the differing aspects of success within the music industry. It was released in July 2026.

This collaboration showcases the synergy between Dicazzi’s gritty storytelling and Country Wizzy’s smooth, melodic rap style. Fueled by a robust modern hip-hop beat, the duo delivers assertive verses that harmonize introspection with street-inspired vigor.

The release marks a continued strong performance for both artists in 2026, following Dicazzi’s praised single “Tafsiri” and Country Wizzy’s successful track “Mademu.” It also brings the two rappers back together after their joint effort on the star-studded collaboration “Money Talks.”
