Throwback Thursday | Mabaga Fresh – Nishachanganyikiwa Acapella (Live Perfomance)

It is once again Thursday, and our “Throwback Thursday” segment highlights the group “Mabaga Fresh,” also known as “Chombo Cha Dola.” This hip-hop duo consists of two individuals with disabilities, Jumanne Omary, commonly referred to as “JB,” and Chritoms Mwingira, known as “DJ Snox,” both hailing from Temeke, Dar-es-Salaam.

In the 1990s, this rap group made significant contributions to the Tanzanian “new generation music scene.” They were instrumental in introducing one of the most notable and respected bongo flava artists, Juma Kassim Kiroboto, better known as “Juma Nature,” through their hit song “Mtulize,” which was produced by the renowned DJ Boni Luv.

Today, we will focus on a track from their debut album titled (Chombo cha Dola) called “Nishachanganyikiwa (Live Acapella).” This song was a favorite among fans, and each time they performed it live, the audience erupted with excitement.

The live rendition of “Mabaga Fresh Nishachanganyikiwa (Acapella)” took place during the album launch of Mr II, also known as Sugu, in 2001 at the then Kilimanjaro Hotel (Pool Side), now The Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam. This event was part of the Muziki Na Maisha album launch. On that day, they also performed “Tupo Kamili” and “Hakuna Noma Ft Mac D & Manzese Crew.“

Tanzanian singer and songwriter Jay Melody, whose real name is Sharif Saidi Juma, released the deeply emotional Bongo Flava single “Upweke” on August 26, 2026. In this song, the talented vocalist candidly shares his feelings of loneliness, emotional fatigue, and the yearning for a special someone in his life.

“Upweke” showcases Jay Melody’s hallmark blend of poignant songwriting and smooth melodic vocals. In this instance, he focuses on the frustrating experience of witnessing others find love while he grapples with his own solitude. The track was produced by Aloneym.

Throughout the song, Jay Melody articulates the mental and emotional burden that often accompanies extended periods of loneliness. His lyrics delve into themes of overthinking, stress, vulnerability, and the desire for authentic companionship, creating an emotional resonance that many listeners can easily identify with.

Msomali Vitamin is the son of Jumanne Omary, popularly known as JB or JB Mabaga Fresh, a legendary figure from the iconic group Mabaga Fresh, renowned for hits such as “Mtulize Ft. Juma Nature” and “Tupo Kamili” among others.

Msomali has finally accomplished his dream to collaborate with his father, JB Mabaga, on a song titled “Alisema Ananipenda,” which is a singeli song with a touch of bongo flava.

This track illustrates how modern Tanzanian artists like Msomali are successfully tackling universal themes of love and affection while incorporating their distinct cultural stories into the music.

The arrangement of the song skillfully merges melodic Singeli/Bongo Flava with harmonious vocal interactions between Msomali and JB Mabaga, resulting in a smooth fusion that appeals to both local and global audiences. The production quality is refined, showcasing a well-balanced mix of traditional instruments and modern electronic elements, which enhances its reach across various platforms.

Tanzanian hip-hop artist Aznas 40 Bars collaborates with Boshoo Ninja, also known as Tanga Boy or Boshoo Ze Son, whose real name is Mathias James Lekule, on the track “Kitu Na Box.” This song is a raw and gritty Bongo Hip Hop piece that is deeply rooted in the underground street-rap scene.

This track is Episode 9 of the Aznas 40 Bars project, which continues to emphasize the artist’s commitment to sharp lyricism, street storytelling, and the essence of authentic hip-hop culture. It was released on August 24, 2026.

In “Kitu Na Box,” the artists delve into themes of survival, lyrical dominance, street realities, and the importance of remaining true to the culture, effectively conveying their message through intricate metaphors and Tanzanian street slang.

From a musical perspective, the track features heavy boom-bap-inspired beats, powerful basslines, and rapid-fire lyrical deliveries, resulting in a rugged sound that showcases the technical prowess and competitive nature of Bongo rap.

Tanzanian rapper Rapcha, whose real name is Cosmas Paul Mfoy, officially launched his latest Bongo Hip-Hop track titled “Mzigo” on August 21, 2026, under the label Wanangu99.

This track was produced by Gachi B, who took charge of the beat production, mixing, and mastering. In this song, Rapcha returns to his forte: vivid storytelling. Instead of presenting a typical rap song, Mzigo unfolds like a brief street film, depicting a bodaboda rider’s desperate quest for money to delve into themes of poverty, survival, morality, and the unsettling lengths individuals may go to for financial gain.

The narrative commences with a young man in dire financial straits who requires a motorcycle to earn a living for the day. An unexpected opportunity arises when he is tasked with collecting a mysterious “mzigo” from Muhimbili National Hospital and delivering it to Magomeni.

What initially appears to be a routine delivery takes a sinister turn when he is directed to the mortuary and given two 5-litre containers. He soon discovers that the contents are purportedly water used for washing deceased bodies stored in the mortuary.

Rapcha intensifies the narrative when the character is promised TZS 200,000 for completing the delivery. The song then unveils its most disturbing twist: the water is allegedly being transported for use in ulimbo, a supernatural practice believed to draw customers to businesses.

Through this unsettling storyline, Rapcha explores how financial desperation can alter an individual’s moral compass. By the conclusion of the track, death itself is portrayed as just another opportunity for someone in pursuit of profit, providing Mzigo with a profound social commentary beneath its cinematic Hip-Hop narrative.

This romantic piece brings together the two artists for a harmonious collaboration, blending Rayvanny’s distinctive melodic style with Kusslove’s expressive vocals. The song was launched on August 21, 2026.

In “Rwanda,” the duo embraces warm melodies and heartfelt storytelling, using the song to explore cross-border romance while celebrating love and the beauty of Rwanda. The East African theme provides the track with a wider regional appeal, connecting Tanzanian Bongo Flava with a romantic tribute that transcends national borders.

The track “Don’t Stop” highlights Mulla Obo’s evolving sound, featuring a soulful mix of urban melodies, smooth vocals, and modern Bongo Flava elements. This release comes as the young artist works to solidify his position as one of the promising new talents in Tanzania’s music landscape.

Mulla Obo is affiliated with High Table Sound, a label founded by the renowned Tanzanian singer and songwriter Barnaba Classic. His commitment to pursuing a music career has been pivotal to his journey, having made the decision to leave school during Form Two to dedicate himself fully to his craft.

This release builds on the success of his earlier 2026 breakout track “Box One,” which played a significant role in expanding his audience and enhancing his presence in East African music.

With “Don’t Stop,” Mulla Obo continues to expand his discography while showcasing the vocal style and musical identity that position him as an artist to keep an eye on within Tanzania’s new generation.

AUDIO | MwanaFA – Baraka Nyingi

The celebrated Tanzanian Hip Hop artist MwanaFa has unveiled a new single titled Baraka Nyingi, which was released on August 17, 2026. This track signifies his return to solo music after an extended hiatus, with MwanaFa himself remarking during the promotional phase that it had been almost four years since his previous release.

Recognized for his profound lyricism and narrative style, MwanaFa presents another introspective piece centered on themes of gratitude, personal growth, and the various experiences that influence one’s life journey. The Swahili title “Baraka Nyingi” translates to “many blessings,” aptly reflecting the song’s theme of acknowledging and valuing life’s gifts.

This release also re-establishes a connection with one of Tanzania’s most esteemed voices in Hip Hop, whose career now intersects with public service. Hamis Mwinjuma, widely known as MwanaFa or Mwana Falsafa, is currently serving as the Member of Parliament for Muheza and the Deputy Minister of Information, Culture, Arts, and Sports.

Released under Life Line Music, “Baraka Nyingi” has a duration of 3 minutes song. MwanaFa is credited as the songwriter, while the composition credits include Hamis Mwinjuma and Sweetbert Mwinula.
